About

Who is Troy Theriot?

(It’s pronounced “terry-oh”)

Troy Theriot is a New Orleans native who moved to Portland, OR, in 1998 to “find” himself after he graduated with a B.A. in English from The University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  After working in child care for several years, playing mean games of wall ball and capture the flag, he decided to become a teacher.  Upon receiving his M.A.T. from George Fox University, the Beaverton School District decided to hire him to teach English initially at Aloha High School.  From 2003-2025, he taught at THE Beaverton High School.  In June of 2025, Troy was appointed to fill the vacant vice president position of the Beaverton Education Association.

Personally, Troy has been married to Lisa Theriot, a Portland native and pediatric emergency room nurse at OHSU, since 2002, and is the father of two sons, Dylan and Jesse, who are products of the Beaverton School District (William Walker ES, Cedar Park MS, and Beaverton HS).  Currently, they are attending the University of Arizona and Oregon State University, respectively.

Along with his involvement in union work over the years, Troy enjoys music, film, concerts, biking, camping, and most things that are accessible in the Pacific Northwest.   Weekends provide an opportunity to drink coffee, read the newspaper, couchsurfing with his cats, and, during football season, yelling at the TV while his New Orleans Saints and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns toy with his emotions.  Troy is also a member of Team Lazy Tarantulas, a group consisting of Portland-area suburbanites who have formed friendships through competitive bike racing, old-man softball, and rec basketball, but now try to get together as much as possible through group rides, camping, and socializing when possible.

As he approaches retirement age, Troy looks forward to traveling as much as possible with his wife in their newly constructed camper van.  The prospect of embracing van life, which offers a more simplified and mobile lifestyle, provides excitement and motivation in the twilight years of his career in education.
